The blazer

A blazer typically refers to a long, double-breasted jacket, most often made from lightweight black or navy flannel. It sits somewhere between the formal suit jacket and the more casual sports jacket. The blazer is looser and less structured around the shoulders and chest than a suit jacket.

There are several stories about the origin of this garment. One traces the blazer back to the brightly colored sports jackets worn by the rowing team of St John’s College, Cambridge, in the 1820s. Another story focuses on 1837, when the captain of the HMS Blazer outfitted his crew with double-breasted navy jackets featuring brass Royal Navy buttons for Queen Victoria's visit to his ship. It’s also possible that the name "blazer" simply comes from the “blazes” or stripes found on the jackets of country clubs in the 1870s.
